It seems that every week, more corporations are releasing news that they were hacked. Data breaches can affect thousands of people and severely hurt a business. While a law firm may not have the personal information of millions of people, the information that can be stolen can be equally, if not more, detrimental.
Last year, the International Legal Technology Association conducted a survey and came to some scary conclusions. In 2013, 76 percent of law firms did not sue or require two factor authentications, 72 percent did not issue encrypted USB drives and 64 percent do not automatically encrypt content-based emails. 90 percent did not employ any laptop tracking, 61 percent have to no intrusion detection tools and 64 have no intrusion prevention tools.
Law firms need to get serious about their risk and make moves to keep themselves and their clients protected. In a law firm, all confidential information should be encrypted 100 percent of the time. Encrypting will keep that information safe in case of data breach. It’s also important for all users to be educated on cybersecurity. All users need to understand the level of risk and threat’s with the firm’s confidential information. Not only do the users need be trained on how to protect the information, but they should be explained the “why” in detail. Additionally, make sure that there are up-to-date written policies in place addressing key cybersecurity topics.
