Why Every Law Firm Needs a Backup Disaster Recovery Plan

This computer's time is up

In an increasingly modern world, there’s a lot of ways to modernize a business or company.  Because of the influx in use of technology, a new system of fail safes called BDRs (backup disaster recovery) were created, and are often a crucial part of any functional corporation. Simply put, this is a plan of action a business has in place and uses when worst case scenarios strike. Whatever the external factor, from natural disasters to malignant PC viruses, your law firm should always be prepared, especially with extremely sensitive information.

There are numerous options for backup options nowadays, from cloud computing services, physical backups via servers in different locations, external HDDs, and more. If you’re not convinced, here are a few reasons why it’s good to consider.

Financial losses and client distrust

Whenever it happens, every moment your law firm is no longer functioning cuts into time and profit. You have a civic duty, of course, but a business has to make money to continue functioning. If you’re unable to respond to clients via phone, email or however else, they’re missed opportunities. Once more, losing client data entirely can be a grievous blow. It not only affects the court case in question, but creates mistrust.

There’s also the issue of current and future client perception. Information lost from disaster or otherwise will be seen as unprofessional, even if was out of a firm’s control. In the sensitive case of law, no one wants to feel like they’ve lost when putting trust in a professional business. So, on top of not having proper options for when the worst happens, future clients will see no reason to work with you either. A BDR plan is meant to recover and save information before any more problems occur.

Unpredictable infrastructure

No matter what, there will be some error or unforeseen problem which emerges from a law firm’s inner workings. From human error to failing software or PC hardware, there’s no getting around it. Even the most cautious and articulate of companies will, in some form, face an issue which compromises data. Even if your area is devoid of disasters, internal factors can always cause the loss of critical data.

Demand for information

Information, especially when dealing with law and client case, is generally constantly demanded. Clients expect their case to be available to them at all times. Therefore, if at any given instance there is some shortcoming or fail in this regard thanks to no recovery plan, no doubt there are some issues. Information spreads quickly, and again, clients who feel a law firm has grievous shortcomings will take their business elsewhere.

These are only a few reasons while disaster recovery plans are hugely important. Your firm can be grossly affected on both a reputation and financial scale, so consider options accordingly.
